Auckland Airport is located approximately 13 miles/21 km south of Auckland City Center in New Zealand. The nearest alternative airports are Pikes Point Airport (NZPK), which is located 5.6 miles/9 km from Auckland Airport and Ardmore Airport (NZAR), which is located 9.9 miles/16 km from Auckland Airport. The capital city of New Zealand is Wellington.

The airport serves as both a domestic and international hub for Air New Zealand, and as the New Zealand hub of Virgin Australia and Jetstar Airways. It is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand and handled 21,021,062 passengers in 2018.

Auckland Airport carries the international airport code of AKL (IATA) and NZAA (ICAO). The airport sits in a slightly elevated location at 23 feet/7 meters above sea level at 37°00′29″ W and 174°47′30″ E.

Airport Access

All passengers with special needs or reduced mobility will find several facilities as well as airport staff ready to help you on your next journey. At Auckland Airport there will be assigned staff to help provide any assistance to passengers with disabilities around the clock. However, please make sure that you make a relevant request at least 48 hours prior to the departure of your flight.

Furthermore, you can find automatic doors and lifts available to all levels of the international terminal for visitors and travelers using wheelchairs. Getting to Auckland Airport is easy by road. Travelers will find two state highways that connect to the airport. These are State Highway 20A and State Highway 20B. State Highway 20A goes from Auckland Airport to the north along George Bolt Memorial Drive and continues through Mangere as an expressway before connecting to State Highway 20. State Highway 20B goes from AKL Airport to the east and crosses Pukaki Creek before proceeding along Puhinui Road to an interchange with State Highway 20 in Wiri.

At the airport, passengers have a broad selection of parking options to choose from including economy parking, standard parking, and executive parking.

Terminal Information

Auckland Airport operates just a single runway, which is 11,926 feet/3,635 meters long. The airport serves two terminals; an International Terminal and a Domestic Terminal. The two terminals are located approximately 500 meters apart and are connected by a free shuttle bus service as well as a walkway. Passengers can walk between the two terminals within 10 minutes on foot. The free inter-terminal bus runs every 15 minutes between 05:00 am to 10:30 pm every day.

The airport has a large number of gates. At the Domestic Terminal, you can find gates 20, 21, 60 and 61, 28-31 and 32-33. The International Terminal serves gates 1-3, 5-10 and 15-18.

If you have lost your baggage at Auckland Airport within the international or domestic terminal, you can claim it from the Operations Reception office. To get there, you have to go to the international check-in area, turn left and head out of door 1 and then turn right.

Car Rentals

There are several major rental car companies at Auckland Airport, including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, and SIXT. Travelers will also find a range of local car hire companies including Drive NZ and InterRent at the airport.

It is highly recommended that all passengers make their car hire reservations as soon as possible before arriving at Auckland Airport. This is due to the fact that there is only a limited number of vehicles available for walk-up consumers.

Transport

All visitors can enjoy easy travel options to and from the airport via buses, shuttle service, and taxis as well as car rental.

All travelers can use one of the many bus options. SkyBus is the main transfer service to Auckland City Center and to the North Harbour from Auckland Airport. The 380 Airporter Bus operates between Onehunga, Mangere Town Centre, and Manukau, via Papatoetoe and Onehunga Train Stations. Finally, the route 31 bus is a frequent bus service that operates between Botany Town Centre and Mangere Town Centre via the Papatoetoe Train Station. The bus stops are located outside the Transports Hub building in both the International and Domestic Terminals.

In addition, taxis are available on the ground transportation area outside the arrivals area (door 8) at the international terminal and outside door 4 at the domestic terminal at Auckland Airport. A taxi trip from Auckland Airport to the City Center of Auckland takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
